Which paper would you buy? A study in content

From a design standpoint I prefer the Sentinel. (full disclosure: I did not work last night so I had nothing to do with said page, however my boyfriend did shoot the picture and I'm quite proud of him.) But I'm not sure that's what's selling these papers. What is?

Nicole, would you care to explain why the Sentinel is better here?

Yeah, I can do that. Though I was trying to stay away from that. I think, as objectivly as possible, that our photo has more impact. it's cleaner and easier to read. Some might call it sensational, but I'm reading the story with the pull quote. "You better go get your baby before the alligators do." If you pass on THAT piece, then I don't know how to get anyone to read anything. I think using that as an entry point was smart. However, this post was about content, right? In that regard, I prefer the Post, at least above the fold. I'll take gas prices over clean air right now having just filled up my 13-gallon VW bug for **$40**!! Plus, the Sentinel's hed on that clean air story doesn't say much. The deks on the gas story over at the post are well done, you can't ever go wrong with that kind of labeling. So, what's selling these papers? Above the fold content. Side-by-side, I'm picking the Sentinel, simply for that pull quote and I'm not afraid to admit it. the Post's presentation gives me no clue that they've got details like that. (Of course, they DO, but that's not what we're talking about, right?) So, does that help? Or was I just too all over the place to make any sense? :)

I agree on the alligator pull quote, although I think it should be bigger. That sells the story for me. The Post's headline blows (it's almost identical to the SS's main headline though).

But I disagree though on the photo. (No offense.) The Post photo, to me, immediately shows me the pain and suffering she's going through. The Sentinel's photo, which is very similar (what else can you going to do at the press circus events), has a different feel to me. It looks like she just got tapped on the shoulder by a friend. There's a lot less emotion in that picture to me.

The Post's gas article combined with the summer movie preview skybox also sells me. Although I hate skyboxes, I like movies, especially Superman.

If I had looked only above the fold, I would have chosen the Sentinel. However if you do the inevitable flip over and check below the fold, The Post wins hands down. The comparison photos at the bottom make all the difference, even if the two girls hugging aren't about the baby story.
